The Edgecombe-Nash Humane Society received a phone call two years ago from a concerned neighbor saying that some animals had been deserted.

Upon arrival, Humane Society investigators discovered a starving cat running around, two rabbits in a small hatch and two dogs living together in an 8x8 kennel. Upon further investigation, they realized that the animals had been abandoned after several years of neglect and abuse. The animals were rescued and taken to a local veterinarian for care.

Since then, all the animals have been adopted except for one of the dogs, Scooby. Scooby was heart-worm positive when the Humane Society rescued him, and he was covered with ticks and fleas. The Humane Society took him to the vet, cleaned him up, cured him of heart worms and had him neutered and microchipped. He receives an annual checkup each year from the vet.

Even though he is an older dog — about 11 years old — Scooby’s personality is that of a lovable puppy. He is a Brittany spaniel who needs an owner who has prior experience in handling dogs, said Kathy Pullen, operations manager for the Humane Society.

“Scooby would be better suited for someone who has no children or other animals because any sudden movement can tend to startle him,” she said. “He’s so used to be being abused and neglected, it’s just heartbreaking.”

Pullen said Scooby will make a good guard dog who always will notify you when someone unknown arrives. He also loves having his belly and head rubbed and is regularly groomed.

Scooby is being fostered at the Paws Inn, where he is walked everyday and has his own exercise cage so he gets regular exercise.

The Human Society is unable to foster animals with in their facilities even though they are working on their own building to be capable of doing that.

They have a few other facilities that are foster facilities but they are always looking for foster homes. They are also looking for volunteers for fundraisers, Society events etc. Anyone with a love for animals is encouraged to get in touch with the Nash Edgecombe Humane Society and get involved.
